Singapore, one of Asia's most cosmopolitan cities, seems to transform itself between each visit. In this section we present the Clarke Quay project and other recent developments being undertaken by Kajima's local subsidiary Kajima Overseas Asia Pte Ltd (KOA).

Singapore Waterfront Renewal Clarke Quay, an old warehouse district on the Singapore River, has been redeveloped into a new tourist destination. The 19th-century-style district stretches over five blocks covering 23,000 square meters (248,000 square feet) and is lined with warehouses containing a wide variety of shops, restaurants, and stalls as well as free-standing shops. Bustling with visitors every weekend, the area has been transformed into a new place for nightlife along the waterfront. The five blocks are dotted with umbrella-like structures, known as the Angels, made of fluorine resin and designed by the U.K. architect William Alsop. These canopies take the edge off the stern exterior of the warehouses to give the area a softer feel and offer protection from rain and sun. Fountains that use cooled water have been installed beneath the Angels and have a freshening effect that makes the space comfortable. The developer of the project is the CapitaLand Group, which contracted general construction work to KOA.

Transformation of the Skyline Singapore is experiencing a dynamic construction boom and is crowded with high-rise condominiums, residential complexes, resort developments incorporating casinos, and large-scale office buildings. The Cathay Building, with its eyecatching glass curtain wall, is located on Orchard Road, the city's main boulevard, and was completed in October 2006. Designed by Kenzo Tange Associates and RDC Architects Pte Ltd, the residential and commercial complex includes a cineplex. Originally the site of a historic movie theater built of stone, the new building features a modern glass curtain wall that incorporates part of the building's original stone facade. KOA has also completed renovation of the shopping center and hotel complex known as Marina Square in the Marina district, an area known for the Millenia development project with which KOA has been involved for some time. It is business as usual for the building's tenants while Marina Square is undergoing renovation, which serves as a good example of how smoothly Kajima technology is applied to major building upgrades.

Other Kajima projects include the integrated hotel and condominium development St. Regis and the City Square Mall, both by the local private developer City Developments Limited (CDL), as well as the Somerset Condominium by the UOL Group Limited. KOA also has several projects underway that underscore its comprehensive planning ability and quality work. These include a luxury residential complex in the Orchard District and an office building in the central business district. The Kajima projects are scheduled for completion by 2010, and will bring a major transformation to the city of Singapore.

Kajima in Southeast Asia Kajima started its activities in Southeast Asia with civil engineering work in Singapore comprising riverbank reinforcement and landfills in the Jurong district during the 1960s. In the 1970s, Kajima erected its first building in Singapore: a production plant for Matsushita Electronics Singapore. This paved the way for the Kajima's support of the expansion into Asia of numerous Japanese manufacturing companies. KOA was established in 1988. For nearly 20 years KOA has been involved, as designer-builder and owner-developer, in numerous development projects in Singapore and other parts of Asia, including Hong Kong, the Philippines, Thailand, Indonesia, Malaysia, and Vietnam. KOA hopes to continue its involvement in Southeast Asia through construction and development projects.

Contributing to the Environment and Safety The government of Singapore, which takes safety and environmental issues seriously, each year presents a number of commendations including Green Mark Awards and other forms of recognition based on strict guidelines and evaluation criteria. The aim is to raise awareness concerning, and provide support for, safety and environmental initiatives in the construction and other industries. KOA has received numerous safety citations and Green Mark Awards. In 2006, Singapore's Ministry of Manpower presented KOA with Annual Safety & Health Performance Awards 2006 for three sites. Two projects were the Silver Award for the Marina Square shopping center and the Newton Suite Condominium, and one was the Best Practice Award for the construction of the Somerset Condominium. Since 1998, KOA has been the recipient of numerous commendations for safety, having been awarded 10 Silver Awards and a total of 21 recognitions including the standard Certificate of Merit. Its safety and environmental initiatives have been highly praised. An award was given to the Newton Suite Condominium on November 24, 2006 at the Singapore Convention Center.
