Celebrating this year's holiday season, Akihabara UDX Winter Illumination 2008 is underway at the Akihabara UDX building. The aim of the event is to establish Akihabara as a special winter attraction while further consolidating the district's status as a hub of IT and communications.
Some 400,000 LED lights are illuminating Akihabara UDX and its surroundings, attracting a multitude of visitors to enliven the entire area. A highlight of Akihabara UDX Winter Illumination 2008 is the Symphony of Music and Light" at the pond on the west side of Akihabara UDX on the first floor. At scheduled times, the automated musical hand bells perform in concert with dazzling Christmas tree illumination, creating a festive Christmas atmosphere for visitors.
A variety of Christmas events are scheduled throughout Akihabara UDX Winter Illumination 2008. The opening light-up ceremony featured a performance by the Tokyo Swing Girls, an all-women big band, and Christmas carols sung by the Tokyo FM Boys Choir. In cooperation with the Kanda Fire Department, Santa Claus appeared from the top of the ladder truck, helping to promote fire prevention. Santa Claus and the Tokyo FM Boys Choir joined in a countdown, and then the lighting illuminated.
Akihabara UDX is a multi-purpose office building with office space, restaurants, shops, clinics, convention halls, a theater, underground parking for 800 cars and more. It opened in March 2006 as part of a major redevelopment project to revitalize the Akihabara area. Kajima and its partners spearheaded the project from the very beginning - acquiring the land for redevelopment and constructing the building - and now operate the entire Akihabara UDX site. Kajima looks forward to a successful and festive Akihabara UDX Winter Illumination 2008.
