Kajima Sculpture Contest

The award-winning works in the Seventh Kajima Sculpture Contest have been selected. Held every second year since 1989, when it marked Kajima's 150th anniversary, the Kajima Sculpture Contest is the only such event in Japan that is held indoors. This year, there were a record 338 entries from both inside Japan and overseas. Many works took advantage of the indoor environment, with many unique and diverse works.

The Gold Award was won by Katsuhiko Azuma for his work Made in 2001 (Soil in Kashiwa). The sculpture is composed of soil, wood, and rope, all of which are materials that eventually decompose into soil, and symbolizes the 21st century as the era of the environment. It has attracted much acclaim, well deserving its first place.

The Silver Award went to Takeshi Kubo for his work Incantations, while the Bronze Award was won by Itaru Komuro for Relation (between Humanity and Nature).

Kajima's Process Mechanical Division Completes Another Successful Project for Mazda Corporation

The Process Mechanical Division (PMD) of Kajima Construction Services (KCS), which specializes in the installation of automated manufacturing and process equipment, has recently completed the installation of new model body component manufacturing lines for Auto Alliance International, a joint venture between Mazda Motor Corporation and Ford Motor Company. Headquartered in Atlanta, Georgia, PMD is a full-service process systems design/build group, providing each of the disciplines required to achieve a turnkey installation.

The completion of this project is the latest successful installation by PMD at the Mazda Motor facility in Flat Rock, Michigan, where the popular 626 model is produced. This particular installation was for the new J-56-J model, which is scheduled to launch in the fall of 2002. As this project consisted of new-generation automaking equipment, PMD had to develop new installation methods for handling and installing this equipment. With a very aggressive schedule and under the constraints of working in a live operating plant, PMD again demonstrated its ability to provide total project coordination and management.

For this project PMD received, offloaded, inventoried, and installed over 18,000 square meters (194,000 square feet) or more than 400 truckloads of equipment, on schedule and within budget. It is this performance that has made Mazda a repeat client for PMD.

The 251,000 square-meter (2.7 million-square-foot) Flat Rock plant was built in 1985 by Kajima International Inc. (KII) in an effort that involved KII's design and construction groups and PMD for the original equipment installation. The project was finished on time by PMD despite a blistering schedule. Since that time, PMD has been awarded three additional contracts for new model equipment lines at the plant. It is this type of dedication to its clients that has made PMD a strong partner with KCS's construction teams and a vital part of the entire organization, contributing greatly to the success of many projects and ensuring continued success in the future.

Kajima to Redevelop Singapore Landmark

Kajima Overseas Asia Pte. Ltd. has just been awarded a S$130 million (approx. US$71.8 million) design-andbuild contract by CapitaLand Commercial Limited for the redevelopment of the Pidemco Centre, located at the fringe of Singapore's financial hub.

The original 12-story office/commercial building, which has been a Singapore landmark, is expected to be vacated by the fourth quarter of 2002 to make way for the new 25-story Class A office development.

The new office building, by conceptual design architect SOM, will include a roof garden, sky cafe sky conference, and gymnasium. The special features will also include cylindrically shaped glass lobbies and curtain walls with metal louvers.

CapitaLand claims the new building will boast 57% more floor space, some 41,000 square meters (440,000 square feet), which can be rented. The project is expected to be completed in October 2004.

From East Europe and Asia

Kajima's Offshore Offices

Kajima is involved in projects all around the world, and has locally incorporated subsidiaries in the United States, Asia, and Europe, as well as several branch offices in Asia and Africa. The Company has recently enhanced its business capabilities by expanding its offshore operations to include the opening of offices in Central Europe, Shanghai, and the Philippines.

Central European Office

Kajima's first entry into Europe was Germany in 1980, followed by the establishment of locally incorporated subsidiaries in the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, and France. In January 2002, the Company opened new marketing offices in Poland and the Czech Republic as part of an aggressive marketing move into the Central European region. There has been a surge of direct investment into Central Europe by companies from many countries, including Japan, and particularly by motor vehicle and electrical goods manufacturers. The Company is therefore positioned to take advantage of a lucrative, expanding market. The two new offices are administered by local staff with local knowledge and expertise, whose main strategy will be to establish a market presence in the region.

Shanghai Office

With China's admittance to the World Trade Organization (WTO), the Company has decided to recommence activities. The Shanghai office will focus on reestablishing our market presence in the region.

Philippines Office

On February 18, 2002, Kajima Overseas Asia (KOA), the Company's locally incorporated entity responsible for overall management of the Asian region, completed registration of a new company, Kajima Philippines Inc. The decision was based on KOA's philosophy of providing an equal level of Kajima service to all parts of southeast Asia. The new company will seek to generate new demand for construction in the region.

Work Completed at the Depot of the First Subway System in Thailand

Kajima Corporation, as the leader of the SNMC Joint Venture (comprising Kajima, Hazama, Maeda, Siam Syntech, Mitsui, and T.S.B.) has completed the work for the design and construction of the depot for the M.R.T. Chaloem Ratchamongkhon Line in Bangkok, Thailand, which commenced in December 1998. A ceremony to mark the completion and handover was held on site on February 7, 2002.

image The Chaloem Ratchamongkhon Line, the first subway system in Thailand, is fully funded by the government of Japan via the Japan Bank for International Cooperation (JBIC). The construction of the system was commissioned by the client, Mass Rapid Transit Authority of Thailand (MRTA), and the finished 20 kilometers of the initial subway system tracks will pass through the center of the capital, Bangkok.

The work on the depot involved the construction of an elevated concrete platform covering 238,000 square meters (2.6 million square feet) on a 409,000-square-meter (4.4 million-square-foot) site. On that platform were constructed track-beds on ballast, building foundations, and internal roads.

Kajima's proposal for pre-cast concrete panels and temporary steel brackets was adopted as soffit forms for pouring the in-situ concrete slab of the elevated platform, which substantially reduced the need to work directly on the super-soft ground for which Bangkok is renowned. Work was able to continue throughout the more than seven months of heavy rainy season that overwhelms the city every year, without compromising safety, quality, or efficiency. The project was completed 109 days ahead of the contract schedule.
