Operations in the Other Business segment include design and engineering, consulting, product sales, and real estate management services provided by Kajima and its affiliated companies. In fiscal 2000, the consolidated net sales of the Other Business segment rose 12.9% year-on-year, to\167.3 billion, and operating income jumped 62.5%, to \2.6 billion.

This section presents an overview of the performances of the principal entities within the Other Business segment\the Design and Engineering Division, Taiko Trading Co., Ltd., and KOCAMB Co., Ltd.

Design and Engineering Division
The Design and Engineering Division works closely with Kajima's design bases in North America, Europe, and Asia (Kajima Associate Inc., Kajima Design Europe Ltd., and Kajima Design Asia Pte. Ltd.), to provide the best solutions for customers worldwide. Having obtained ISO 9000 and ISO 14001 certification, each member of this network is explicitly qualified to provide services of the highest quality and reliability.

In fiscal 2000, the Design and Engineering Division received orders for 687 projects with a combined value of \413.1 billion and was engaged to provide consulting services for 583 projects. Major projects included three buildings being constructed as part of the Shiodome Redevelopment Project in Tokyo\the 38-floor Kajima Tower (hotel/office building), the 34-floor Kyodo News Headquarters Building, and the 28-floor Nippon Express Headquarters Building. Construction commenced on the 25-floor Shiba Park Tower, which employs Kajima's "free-plan" high-rise building system. Kajima was involved in the design of the Press Conference and Working Center & Cafeteria for Kyushu-Okinawa Summit 2000, the Italian Cultural Institute, Chancery Redevelopment Project, and Universal Studios Japan.

In construction technology, Kajima developed a 3-D database CAD system that enables the integration of data related to all project stages, from initial design through construction. The Company developed and marketed an environment-friendly tile that contains a high percentage of recycled material and bears the Eco-Mark of the Japan Environment Association.

Kajima received numerous awards in recognition of its design and engineering skills during fiscal 2000. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) and International Association for Sports and Leisure Facilities (IAKS) awarded the Company the IOC/IAKS Award 1999 Gold Medal for the Nagano Olympic Memorial Arena. In Japan, Kajima's construction design and technology skills were recognized by the receipt of 47 awards, such as Building Contractors Society prizes and the Nikkei BP Technology Award.

Taiko Trading
This subsidiary supports the construction operations of Kajima Group members by marketing construction machinery and materials and handling leasing operations. Established in 1947, Taiko Trading has grown to become a key member of the Kajima Group. In fiscal 2000, Taiko Trading's sales edged up 0.5%, to \249.5 billion, and the company's operating profit expanded 14.6%, to \0.4 billion.

Taiko Trading markets and leases diverse construction materials, including steel materials, temporary construction materials, cement, and concrete as well as such construction equipment as excavation machinery, transporter machinery, and cranes. Possessing a wealth of experience and know-how in these fields, Taiko Trading is able to accurately evaluate products and technologies and help customers select and procure the machinery and materials that best meet their needs.

Kajima Overall Control Automatic Management of Building (KOCAMB)
This subsidiary offers a full range of building management services. Besides such day-to-day services as building and facility maintenance, inspection, and cleaning, the operations of KOCAMB encompass building management consultation, building survey and analysis services, and maintenance and renewal construction management.

At the end of fiscal 2000, KOCAMB managed 794 buildings with a total floor space of 6,240,000‡u. This diverse portfolio included multipurpose high-rise complexes, office buildings, condominiums, schools, hospitals, and hotels.

In fiscal 2000, KOCAMB's revenues increased 4.2%, to \27.0 billion. KOCAMB is steadily expanding its operations, which play an important role in the Kajima Group's strategy for building life-cycle management business.
